Tom Hayward

TOM HAYWARD President

Tom is the Humanities Reference Librarian and Lecturer in Classical and
Medieval Studies in Bates College. He and his wife Susan have two grown children. Tom likes to listen to jazz, does watercolor paintings when he has time, and tries to go bird-watching at any opportunity. He participated recently in the Maine Dragonfly and Damselfly Survey, both on land and from his kayak. He has been a member of the Stanton Board since the late 1970s, and has served as both president and treasurer.

MIKE MARCHUS Vice President

Mike is the Branch Manager at KeyBank Great Falls Plaza in Auburn. As a neighbor to Thorncrag, Mike enjoys visiting the sanctuary with his wife and teenage children. Two of Mike's favorite pastimes are snowshoeing and running, making Thorncrag one of his favorite spots during all four seasons of the year. Originally from Northern California, Mike grew up with a deep appreciation of the natural world. Since moving to Maine over 25 years ago, he has spent as much time as possible enjoying the Maine outdoors. He and his family enjoy hiking, kayaking and canoeing.

David Haines

DAVID HAINES Secretary

David, a member of the Club for over 40 years, is Professor of Mathematics Emeritus in Bates College. He also recently retired as chair of the Board of Trustees of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics, in Limestone. Along with his participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, David has keen interest in natural history and in birding. His life list of 1275 species [observed throughout Europe, Africa, South America, as well as in the States] includes 253 seen in Maine. 112 of these were observed around his wife Alice’s and his home.

 

LINDA SEAMANS Treasurer

Linda currently serves as treasurer of Stanton. She graduated from St. Dom’s, received her undergraduate degree from St. Joseph’s College and the MBA from the Southern New Hampshire University. In September Linda celebrates her 25th year with her employer, L.L. Bean, where she is currently a senior business analyst. She resides in Lisbon with her husband Alan and son Dan. Linda has been a birder since childhood, and now leads some Stanton winter field trips. She also enjoys kayaking with Alan on the quiet waters of Maine.

 
Tom Robustelli

TOM ROBUSTELLI 

Tom is a certified public accountant with the firm Robustelli, Rotz, and Soucy in Lewiston. As a neighbor to Thorncrag, just above the East Ave. gate of the sanctuary, he provides an important service to watch over that part of the property. His wife Nancy and both children, Jennifer and Jason, have helped out at the sanctuary over the years. Tom is outdoors as much as possible enjoying fishing, boating, swimming and hiking. Originally from Connecticut, Tom was a radio announcer and newspaper reporter before becoming a CPA.

 
Jeri Mauer

JERI MAURER

Jeri is a hospital manager at Central Maine Medical Center and lives with her husband Gary, Co-chair of the Stewardship Committee, in Leeds. Jeri enjoys hiking, gardening, and exploring National Parks. She was a volunteer nature guide for school groups at Thorncrag for 10+ years.

 
Dan Marquis

DAN MARQUIS

Dan and his wife of 30 years, Sandy, own and operate Marquis Signs in Lewiston. Their 'kids' are 3 parrotsand a cat. Dan is a frequent leader for Club field trips because he is an avid and skilled birder, kayaker, and nature photographer. He recently attended a Photo Workshop in Yosemite National Park. Dan is currently a contributing photographer for Lewiston Auburn Magazine.

 

BRUCE DAMON

Bruce is a life-long resident of Lewiston/Auburn, where he is owner and president of Damon Refrigeration Company. His father established the well-known local business in 1951. He and his wife Marcia Baxter have three grown children. Bruce is currently vice chair of the Lewiston Planning Board, and chair of the Lewiston Energy Committee. He also is a member of the Lewiston/Auburn Community Forest Board and of the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce.

 

JIM RICHTER

Jim Richter is a Professor of Politics at Bates College and former chair of the Environmental Studies Program there. He has been a member of the Stanton Bird Club for over twenty years, when he and his wife moved to Lewiston from Ohio. He lives with his wife Laurie and daughter Ellen not far from the sanctuary and often enjoys the quiet beauty of Thorncrag. His other interests include the classical music, opera and history.

 
ODIE BACHELDER

Odie grew up in the Rangeley area of Maine. His formal career in the investment business started in 1996, and he is currently affiliated with a private group. His previous banking experience included asset management and trust services. Odie’s accounting degree is from Husson University. He currently is chair of the Stanton Board’s Finance Committee.


 

 

CARL STRAUB

Carl has recently retired as the Clark A. Griffith Professor of Environmental Studies in Bates College. During his 40 years of teaching in the College, he also served for 18 years as the academic dean. Alongside his professional career, Carl has served as a trustee or board member of many non-profit associations dedicated to protecting the environments and to supporting the arts in public life. This service has included being president of the Maine Audubon Society. He is especially interested in the preservation of land and its wildlife, and in how education and the arts can further such effort.

 

OWEN BUCK

Owen, like other nominees to the Board, has been a birder since childhood. He and his wife have two grown children. Owen is on the medical staff of the Tri-County Mental Health Services in Lewiston. He was a biology major in Bates College and then earned a master’s degree in parasitology from Ohio State. In 1979 he earned his M.D. from the University of Vermont and completed his psychiatry residency in Duke. In 2004 he received a theological degree from the Bangor Theological Seminary.

 

ROB CROSBY

After both attending high school and starting a teaching career in Alaska, Rob moved to Turner in 1977, where he and his wife Lynn raised two children and have continued to
live. Rob has been a high school English teacher and an administrator or director with non-profit agencies, including Head Start. He served for 15 years as a speech and language clinician in the Auburn School District. Since Lynn’s and his retirements [Lynn is also an educator], he spends as much time as possible in his kayak, with camera and binoculars at hand.

 
KATHLEEN DEMERS

Kathy graduated from the University of New Hampshire, finished Occupational Therapy clinical fieldwork in 1982, and began working in Maine. She and her husband have three grown children, who were educated at home, public school, at area colleges/universities and in the community, before going on to attend and recently graduate from college. As young children, they were Junior Naturalists with the Stanton Bird Club between 1993 and 2002, during which Kathy was actively involved. She served for 5 ½ years as Coordinator of the BookReach Early Childhood Literacy Program of the Lewiston and Auburn Public Libraries. She enjoys the learning process, creating music, walking, bicycling, and kayaking. She currently educates students at Lewiston High School.
