6: Birds of Prey - Chewonki Foundation October
11, Saturday, 9 AM - Noon. Field Trip to Bradbury Mt. State Park in Durham
for hawk migration. Meet at High Street Congregational Church Parking Lot, Pleasant
St., Auburn. November 3: It looks Like a Duck! It must
be a duck! Students will learn about the local ducks on the river that are here
all winter, and how they survive. November 15, Saturday:
7 AM - 11 AM Field Trip to see local ducks on the river and open water of
Lake Auburn. Meet at JC Penney parking lot. December 1:
The Christmas Bird Count - Get ready to be one of the thousands of people
across the country who count birds at Christmas! We will set up the teams, get
the forms ready, hear about the history of this amazing race, practice knowing
the birds, and talk to the area coordinator, Stan DeOrsey. December
20: Christmas Bird Count. We will travel to the homes of Juniors to see all
the feeder birds for the big count. The day starts at 6 AM, goes to 4 PM and ends
with a pizza party so all the teams can report in and see the grand total! We
will plan the home visits in more detail later. January
5: Fish in Winter - How do they stay under the ice for six months? David Footer
will be invited to share his work and knowledge of Maine fish. Handouts will include
pictures of local fish and fish facts. January 10: Ice Fishing!
Details will be determined as we get closer to this date. February
2: Owls - How they hunt, eat, and throw-up!. Handout will include pictures
of local owls and owl facts and we will dissect owl pellets. February
7: Owl Prowl - We will go out at night on a special route to stop, play owl
calls on a tape, and record scientific data for Maine Audubon. March
2: Do you collect things in nature? In the past people collected many natural
objects to learn more about how the world works. Be prepared to bring in your
collection of objects and we will talk about the value of collections in scientific
research.
March 7: Field Trip to the Turner Natural History Museum
to see all the different collections. April 6: Rocks and
Minerals of Androscoggin County. Handouts and samples will be presented to
the students. Each student will make a zipper pull using local rocks and minerals. April
11: Field Trip to Mt. Apatite to find minerals, gems, and rocks. May
4: Bogs with Bug Eating Plants! Come learn information about bog development
and the ecology of a bog. Make a model of an insectivorous plant! May
9: Field Trip to Maurer's Bog in Leeds.
