RESULTS of the Stanton Bird Club's Leader's Choice field trip
For this Leader's Trip excursion we decided to head to Freport in hopes of
seeing the Barrow's Goldeneyes that were being reported there. However, with
most of the ice out of the lower Harraseeket River, the ducks had lots of place
to roam and we never did see them. But while we were at Winslow Park we were
treated to a good and fairly close look, albeit short, look at a winter plummage
Red-throated Loon. Though not a life-bird for any of us, it was indeed the best
look we had ever had and it was very easy to tell the differenct etween it and
the Common Loon
The day was suppose to be rather nice, if not a bit cool, but instead we were
faced with snowy conditions most of the morning. The morning started off at
Derek Lovitch's bird store on Rte. 1. Although the store wasn't yet open, we
were able to take a leisurely look at his busy feeders. In fact, this is where
most of the morning's land birds were seen.
The trip took us home through New Gloucester by the New Gloucester Marsh, where
we were treated to the sight of the season's first Kestral sitting on a wire.
