Stanton Bird Club field trips are free and open to the public. All trips leave 5 minutes after listed departure time. Car pooling is encouraged. In the event of inclement weather, contact the trip leader the night before to see if the trip is still on. For general information concerning field trips, contact Dan Marquis.

Birding at New Gloucester MarshOCTOBER 17, Saturday: 7:30am-2pm. Sanford Sewer Ponds. Migrating waterfowl and shorebirds collect here in fall, and the occasional rarity is never out of the question. If time permits we may check other local hotspots. Bring a lunch. Leader: Stan DeOrsey. Meet at Staples parking lot, Lisbon St., Lewiston. Results

NOVEMBER 7, Saturday: 7:30am-11:30am. Lewiston/Auburn lakes and rivers.
An exploration of open water for ducks and other late migrants. Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at J.C. Penney parking lot, Center St., Auburn. Results

DECEMBER 5, Saturday: 8am-3pm. Marginal Way, Ogunquit.
Early winter ducks, especially Harlequins, and maybe a King Eider, are the specialty of the day here. Dress warm, and bring a lunch. Leader: Dan Marquis. Meet at Staples. Results

DECEMBER 19, Saturday: Dawn till dusk. Annual Christmas Bird Count.

We'll be scouting for
grebes, eiders and scoters at this mid-coast location. Leader: Linda Seamans. Meet at Staples. Results

FEBRUARY 13, Saturday: 8am-1pm. Leader's Choice.
We'll wait to see where the best birds are this week and head off in search of them ourselves. Leader: Dan Marquis. Meet at Staples. Results

MARCH 20, Saturday: 8am-1pm. Winslow Park, Freeport.
We'll explore some open
water along the mid-coast in search of Buffleheads, scaup, mergansers and
maybe even a Barrow's Goldeneye! Leader: Linda Seamans. Meet at Staples. Results

APRIL 9, Friday: 7:00pm-8:30pm. Woodcocks & Snipe, Outer College Street. Come look for these fascinating birds as they do their sky-dance mating ritual. Leader: Linda Seamans. Meet at Staples. Rained Out

APRIL 24, Saturday: 6:30pm-8:30pm. Vernal Pools, Thorncrag.
Learn the science and discover the wonders of the vernal pools of Thorncrag. Volunteer monitors will share data and discuss the ecology of different pools. Limited to 10 participants. Registration required. Call Alan Seamans at 240-1723. Meet at Thorncrag parking lot.

APRIL 27, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk I.
An early morning bird walk beginning at the front of Hathorn Hall on the Bates College campus, past Mt. David to Riverside Cemetery. Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at Hathorn Hall. Results

APRIL 30, Friday: 6:30pm-8:30pm. Herping at Thorncrag. We'll be checking the ponds for frogs, salamanders, and invertebrates. Bring a flashlight. Leader: Susan Hayward. Meet at Thorncrag parking lot.

MAY 4, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk II.

MAY 8, Saturday: 8:00am-12:00am. Spring Wildflowers at Woodbury Sanctuary.
The wildflowers of Maine begin to bloom early before the leaves of the forest block the sun. Come enjoy an easy walk along the trails of Stanton's preserve in Monmouth, to find these delicate, pastel treasures. Leader: Susan Hayward. Meet at Thorncrag parking lot. Results

MAY 11, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk III.

MAY 15, Saturday: 7am -Noon. Evergreen Cemetery.
This Portland hotspot is a migrant trap, and usually yields an abundance of warblers. Leader: Dan Marquis. Meet at Staples. Results

MAY 16, Sunday: 7am-10am. Warren Warbler Walk.
SBC's longest continually offered bird walk. This perennial favorite goes through some prime habitat, including riparian, woodland and farm fields. Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at J.C. Penney. Results

MAY 18, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk IV.
Leader: Tom Hayward. Results

MAY 19, Wednesday: 7am-11am. Birding at the Sylvester's.
An annual favorite. A walk through prime riverside habitat. Those who have the time may want to continue on to the Benjamin farm to round out the morning's birding. Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at Sylvester's, 1128 Riverside Dr., Auburn. Results

May 22, Saturday: 7am-Noon. Leader's Choice.
We'll wait to see where the best birds are this week and head off in search of them ourselves. Leader: Stan DeOrsey. Meet at Staples. This trip went to the Papermill Trail in Lisbon. Results

MAY 25, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk V.

JUNE 12, Saturday: 6am-4pm. Boy Scout Road, Rangeley.
This all-day trip will take us to some north woods habitat in search of boreal species. A good opportunity to add some lifers to your list, such as Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, Spruce Grouse, and
Black-backed Woodpecker. Leader: Stan DeOrsey. Meet at J.C. Penney. Results

JULY 10, Saturday: 7am-Noon. Birding by Kayak, Brownfield Bog.
A whole different birding experience. Leader: Bonnie Soper. Meet at Staples. Results

AUGUST 21, Saturday: 7am-Noon. Scarborough Marsh.
Early migrating shorebirds and more. Leader: Stan DeOrsey. Meet at Staples. Results

SEPTEMBER 11, Saturday: 8am-11am. Fall Warblers of Thorncrag.
Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at Thorncrag parking lot.

SEPTEMBER 25, Saturday: 7:30am-3pm. Hawk Watch, Mt. Agamenticus. We'll be looking for migrating raptors, and whatever else may still be lingering before heading south. Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at J.C. Penney.

Summer & Fall Wednesday Walks
Walks are also holding walks every other Wednesday from June to December at
various Lewiston / Auburn area locations. All walks are free and
generally last from 8am to 11am. Exact dates and locations are posted on

2010 Wednesday Morning Summer
Bird & Nature Walks
With Stan & Joan DeOrsey

*Meeting Location: Except on Sept. 8 and Oct. 6, walks leave at 8AM from the Promenade Mall parking lot, near Staples, 855 Lisbon St., Lewiston to be at the walk site at 8:20AM. Only the Sept. 8 and Oct. 6 walks leaves from the Auburn Mall, JC Penney's end parking lot, 550 Center St., Auburn at 8AM.

 *Walks end by 11AM, but you may leave early. The Sept. 22 walk ends about 1PM.

 *If raining at 7AM and predicted to continue through 10AM, the walk is canceled.

 *Bring binoculars and dress for the weather; layers work very well.

 *Walks are approximately 2 miles on an even and basically dry surface.
